Large Blue Heron we saw on our first paddle. |
Wild pig coming to the river to drink |
Interesting bloom that Paul found on our hike Saturday |
Might be the same big heron we saw on our first paddle |
We arrived at Jonathan Dickinson SP
ttwo hours too early! We were forced to go to kill some time, as our
spaces were not vacated. Check-out is at 1:00 pm and check-in at
3:00. We headed back up the road to Publix and McDonalds for
shopping and wifi. Dee and Paul had discovered that Publix has great
Key Lime Pies as well as Key Lime/Mango and Kiwi/Strawberry. We are
managing to go through a pie about every two days...yum...and so far
we are not getting tired of the flavors.
The park is quite large at Jonathan
Dickinson. We are in the river camping area which has more trees
than the Pine Grove campground, which is just in a large field.
There are a total of 130 campsites in all 30 in the river area, which
is also adjacent to the boat launch. We have been able to carry the
kayaks over and are quickly in the water. This state park is just
north of Palm Beach and has an entirely different ambiance than the
others. This is much more of a city campground vs the isolation we
have just left behind. The sites are also smaller and unfortunately
the bathrooms are the worst we've had on the entire trip!
Thursday, March 1 we got on the river
fairly early, before 10:00 and paddled for well over 90 minutes. We
saw great blue and little blue herons, lots of osprey in the air and
in their nests. It was a lovely paddle to be sure. In the afternoon
we got in a nice bike ride and went to the top of Hobe mountain which
looms 86' above sea level and is the highest natural point in
southern Florida.
There are campers and then there are
campers. Last evening we had bikini clad young women whooping it up
for a while. Now we are getting more new folks in who have yappy
dogs and a diesel Dodge pickup with unbelieveable loud exhaust..
There ought to be a law against yappy little dogs.
Friday, March 2, we got in both a nice
hike and paddle! Granted, there was some wind when we paddled, but
it was still great fun! The Loxahatchee River has many meanders and
so we were constantly in and out of the wind.
Saturaday we will depart for the
Everglades and we won't have wifi after we get there so for nine
whole days we'll not be communicating with you. We'll catch up in
mid March with what we have seen and done!
