First day in New Orleans

We have had our first day in New Orleans and I'll bet we walked miles. We've tasted pralines at several shops and returned to the place where they are actually made to buy some. YUMMY.

We started our excursion by taking a ferry (free) from the our side of the river to right at the end of Canal Street! Oh, there was a cost, $5 for parking but cheaper on this side of the river than on the other. The ferry ride takes only about 10 minutes and then you are there!

We chatted with folks on the ferry and got a recommendation for a restaurant for lunch (Coops) where we did eat and certainly enjoyed our selves. Since it was really the first taste of food from this area for us we have nothing against which to compare what we ate. But maybe the photos will tell all? Here is David's lunch of fried oysters and Marty's lunch of Jambalaya.

We did a lot of walking around, seeing and hearing all sorts of sounds. We heard quite a few street bands some of which were really, really good (we even got a CD from one of them).

By the end of the afternoon as early evening settled into the city we decided that we'd walked around enough and headed back to the campground.

This is a story all in itself. We had been told that if we arrived back at the campground later than 7:00 p.m. (or something like that) that we needed to use an access road and special key code to open a lock. So we went to the access road and turned in at the gate and found that the lock was a key type and there was no way any code would get us in. We called four different numbers, several for emergency only, only to get recordings. We were not happy about this and decided we should just go to the main gate and see if there was any information there...well, the main gate was open as were all the others! So our reward for following the rules was a lot of wasted time and frustration!

Our dinner was beer, wine, cold chicken, salsa, chips, cheese, and crackers...and music we had purchased in the city!
