It is Tuesday and we will be in The Everglades tomorrow

Finally our waiting is done!  We just stopped at the service center where the transmission HAS BEEN REPLACED and now are just waiting for them to take it out for a test run, then back up on the lift to make sure there are no leaks anywhere.  We should be ready to hit the road by 4:00 or maybe earlier.

This morning we visited both the North and South Laurel Grove cemeteries.  We have now visited all the historic cemeteries in the city.  These two are interesting because one is where the "white" folks are buried and the other is for the "blacks".

The photos below are from the North (white cemetery.)

Monument to the Confederate soldiers who died.

The Confederate soldiers cemetery.  Judging by the dates of death, these all were killed in action.

Union soldiers buried in a separate area away from the Confederates.  If you look closely you can read the names of the states.

As usual, Marty found a grave that particularly caught her fancy, this because of the grieving woman.

Above is the sign for the South Cemetary where the blacks are buried.

One of several notable Savannah residents buried here is the Rev. Andrew Bryan who helped found the First African Baptist Church in Savannah; one of the oldest black congregations in the nation.  His brother was also active as a deacon and they are buried side by side.

The South cemetery is not nearly as well cared for as the North one.  The plot shown above made us feel a little saddened.  It sits separately from others and what must have been a beautiful fence around it is now falling apart.

These two cemeteries are quite different from the other two that we have visited in the city.  Cemeteries are such interesting places to walk through, reading the grave stones, looking at the ages and dates of birth and death and how that has changed over time from indicating the years, months and days of one's life to just the years.

Tomorrow sometime in the afternoon we will lose Internet and phone coverage and won't be able to be reached until we leave the Everglades in about 9 days.  When we again have coverage we will have a huge blog posting.  We are very much looking forward to joining Dee and Paul and then around Sunday will be joined by Deb and Trudie...we will surely have some fabulous meals and lots of great conversations.  And, Marty and Deb will be in bird photographers' heaven.
