Arrived safely in Fethiye

The Ani Pension in Kas was a very interesting place and we were within easy walking distance to the otogar.  We had purchased our tickets on Tuesday so were ready to go.  This route to Fethiye was also a combination of coastal and mountains.  There were some wonderful views and we saw more greenhouses. Along the sea, at least in this region, we have seen more greenhouses than you can imagine.  We are saying that because as you are riding in the bus looking down at a village or city you see what you initially think are well groomed fields  then as you get closer you realize that it is all greenhouses!

About 30 minutes outsie of Fethiye the bus driver pulled into a gas station where our bus was washed!  We guess these guys just cannot tolerate dust on their buses.  Or maybe they want to make a good impression as they pull into the next otogar!  When we arrived we arranged for a tour on Thursday which will take us to another set of ruins that would have been too far to get to without other transportation.  Regular mini buses don't seem to run to them now.  But the nice thing is that the bus company gave us a free ride to our hotel!  That was an unexpected surprise.

Taken with the MacBook from our room in the V-Go Hotel in Fethiye!
Today after we got checked in we walked up to the dolbush stop and took the minibus to Kayakoy which is an abandoned Greek village.  In 1923, after World War I and a bloody Greek-Turkish war, there was a population exchange and the Greeks returned to their homeland.   There now remains a large village of about 400 abandoned roofless structures.

We walked up the old streets and through the ruins and tried to imagine what these homes were like when there were voices, and children playing and old women sitting on front steps.  What was their daily life?  Some of the structures are still elegant and there are wonderful fireplace structures with beautiful chimneys.  Only the phtos do them justice!

We have just returned to the V-Go Hotel in Fethiye from our excursion of the day.  It is also dark, thundering, and lots of lightening so we are glad to be back.  The rain is just starting and the harbor is quite the scene with all the boats and lightening!  Unfortunately we won't get a photo of that for you because we're keeping under cover.
