Saturday's little adventures

Saturday afternoon

Today was not one of our most successful days in terms of getting to see what we came for.  We got a reasonable start up to Taos with great anticipation of seeing pueblos.  We were most impressed with the scenery between Santa Fe and Taos which put us on a road reaching altitudes greater than 7000 feet.  The road followed along the Rio Grande and was stunning.  We spotted signs for vineyards so stopped in to Vivac which has won awards and produces wines that are organic!  A little history, New Mexico was the first state to produce wines.  I got to taste several of their wines which were very good...and yes, we got some.

Taos is another commercial tourist trap.  It is just smaller than Santa Fe and that is about all you can say.  We were disappointed, but then we were reading from a Lonely Planet guidebook printed in 1996 so I guess. should have expected some changes.  From Taos we headed up the road, once again with great anticipation, to see the Taos Pueblos.  Much has been written about the and many photos taken.  We were ready to be impressed.  As we neared the split in the road that would have taken us there we were stopped by a local with a sign reading that the Pueblos were closed to tourists for the day.  Ouch...foiled again.

From Taos we drove further north to a bridge that crosses the Rio Grande gorge and then headed back to Santa Fe via a different route that took us up even further into the hills and we were at 8600 ft at one point.

Just back from dinner at a small Mexican/American restaurant.  Family style, just good food and some live music.  Mostly Hispanics having dinner with their kids...and us.  Made up for all the disappointments of the day.
