Wednesday am

No hike yesterday, but we did see a golden eagle about 25 miles from the park.  I think for the Thorntons it might have been the first.

Another item relating to the roads.  We saw these first in BBNP and then again on other non divided highways...signs that said "watch for water on the road".  These signs would be followed by a dip in the road and a flood depth sign marking off the feet up to five.  We figure that if the water is more than five feet only a truly crazy person would try to cross it.

This is El Capitan!  I wrongly identified this in a phone photo sent to some of you yesterday as the Guadalupe peak...which it is not!

The Pine Springs campground is a lot different from those we encountered in Big Bend.  Here they separate the tents from the RVs.  We are in a parking lot with spaces marked off with no grass and most of the spaces do not have trees.  We do because wee took an end spot on the side so have some vegetation.

One of the hiking books we have looked at mentions the winds up here saying that in Guadalupe gap the wind has even blown over tractor trailer rigs as well as campers in this campground.  We will need to be cognizant of the wind as we hike today.

A word or two about people.  Folks who stay at the national parks in the campgrounds seem to be about the friendliest folks you will meet.  One almost immediately becomes part of a brotherhood of adventure seekers.

Great sunrise this morning and then a good hike of about 6+ miles.  Saw another new bird, a Phainopepla (which is in the flycatcher family) and is a very beautiful black bird.

This is the Acorn Woodpecker we saw in Big Bend.  What a colorful little bird.  The red on the top of his head is about as bright as you can get!  Amazing.
