Wednesday, April 6

Wednesday in West Virginia we have driven Rt 50.  This is another two lane, up mountains and back down again, 9% grades and switchbacks with 15mph speed limits.  We stopped in  Mt. Storm for gas at the first station we had seen in miles.  The Mt. Storm store was the go-to-place for everything you need, food, nails, hunting supplies, fresh coffee, and of course, gas at a reasonable price.  They also had snow in the mountains, still fresh on the ground as when other places got rain over the weekend, their elevations turned it to snow.

Closing in on Washington area, it is now five weeks since we started our journey and we have traveled somewhere between 4000-5000 miles in the camper.  Our official trip is nearing its conclusion as we will spend the next few days visiting family.

We established a rhythm in our daily behavior.  We got up and if we were camping we always brewed some coffee before breakfast and even sometimes when we were on the road too.  It was a social time with Dee and Paul, a time to discuss the news and talk about the day ahead of us.  Our days stretched across states, Walmart parking lots, rest areas on Interstates, National Parks, and Bureau of Land Management camping areas.  We had an easy flow to each day sometimes doing longer hikes on mountain trails, other times easier walks along streams or rivers, and toward the end we scrambled over limestone tops of rock formations.  We ate trail mix, apples, bananas, oranges, and cooked amazing meals for both breakfast and dinner.  We took photos and marveled at the natural beauty of our surroundings no matter where we happened to be.

It is not without a little sadness that this is coming to a close.  We have had a much more simple life without the distractions we have in Hallowell.
