Airports trigger my thoughts about communication

Sitting or walking about pretty much any airport you will see the vast majority of folks under the age of 60 plugged into a mobile phone, computer, or iPod.  What does this say about our society or culture?  Can we not be out of touch for even one second of any day.  What happened to that wonderful expectant feeling one used to get while waiting for a letter that was to be hand delivered to your home by the postman?  Or, better yet, you had wait until you got home to make or receive a phone call.  For some of us it was also complicated by party lines in a rural environment waiting for your neighbors to "get off the line" so you could make a call!  What has happened to us?  What do we lose as a result of the immediacy of our communication?  What do we gain?  There is certainly a balance in there someplace.

I am as guilty as the others sitting in Logan, using wifi I have emailed, paid bills, checked currency exchange rates, and if I could, I would Skype someone to show them our trip has officially begun!

Could our perceived need to be in touch with others all the time reflect our inability to just be alone?  Just be quietly with and within our selves?  Ponder that one!
